Why Collect Customer Data?
Most valuable asset of any business is its customers. For majority of the consumer facing store-front businesses (like restaurants, hotels, salons, spa, retail, auto service, hotel, motel etc), customers walk in every day for service and walk out of the door after the service. Businesses always want to see their customers come back for more service and businesses want to constantly evaluate what their customers think about their service. A satisfied customer almost always bound to come back and give more business. Also, a satisfied customer is the best spokesperson for a business and with his/her word of mouth can bring in a lot of new business. Business always want to bring in new customers, but at the same time need to retain their existing customers inorder to grow a loyal customer base and the revenues.
- Building a list of customers visiting your business location gives the business ability to directly communicate and stay in constant contact with the customer. Customer signup information can be used in electronic (email and SMS) and traditional marketing campaigns like newsletters, new product offers, coupons and other promotions to entice the customer to come back.
- Collecting the feedback of customers visiting the business location gives the business the ability to gauge its service quality and act up on it to improve customer satisfaction.
- Collecting customer surveys and opinions gives the businesses to evaluate cross-sell/up-sell opportunities and/or launch of new products/services and/or in the business expansion to new areas.
- Collecting customer information for loyalty and rewards programs helps the business build mutually rewarding relationship with customer.
- Analyzing customer data based on age, sex, geographical area, coupon redemption rates, visit frequency etc, and use that information to grow the business in the right direction.
The best time for a business to entice a customer to give their contact information and/or feedback on service is when the customer is at the business location.
Customer Data Collection Challenges
There are lots of fragmented solutions in the market, and the most pre-dominant way business collect their customer information are:
1) Paper based information collection and/or survey forms
- Paper forms have fixed set of collection fields like (first name, last name etc), and need to be printed up-front and are very hard to change.
- No validation can be performed on these paper based forms for invalid entries or missing required fields etc.
Customer's hand writing may be illegible.
- The paper forms need to be collected, stored, organized and manually entered into a computer or other system to be able to use it meaningfully, which is not only time consuming and cost-ineffective but is also error-prone.
- Improper discarding of the customer information on these paper forms could lead to abuse and privacy issues.
- Take home and mail-in data collection and survey forms lack the effectiveness, as the customer may not remember or be motivated to fill out the form and mail it in. The mail-in collection forms are costly and the business needs to pick up the mailing costs.
- Paper based forms are not environmentally friendly.
2) Phone Surveys
- Is used only for conducting surveys.
- Requires customer to call a particular number to answer the survey questions. The phone number to call is usually printed on the customer receipt.
- Customer may not remember or be willing to fill out the survey once he/she leaves the business location. Even if the customer remembers, he/she needs to retain the receipt with the survey phone number properly.
- Customer feedback may not be accurate if they take more than 24 hours to respond to the survey.
- It's a lengthy and costly process for the business
3) Online Web Site
-
Requires the businesses to have web presence, and proper setup to capture customer signup's and surveys online.
-
Customer must be informed about the website and requires customer to remember to go online and signup or take a survey. With life on the fast lane, this is the last thing on customer's mind.
-
Suffers from the same drawbacks as Phone based solution.
-
Costly solution for small and medium sized businesses to have and to maintain a customer retention program online.
None of these solutions in the market today effectively solve the problem of building customer lists while the customer is at the business location and you have their fullest attention and the customer has his/her thoughts about your business services fresh in mind to be able to provide an instant feedback.

wiZit - Sterizon Solution
The Sterizon wiZit device will provide significant improvement over the solutions that are in use today. It has the following advantages:
-
Uses a mobile, wireless, portable, sturdy, pocket sized Wi-Fi device with rechargeable battery as the customer data collection unit. This makes it easier to deliver the device directly to the Customer at his/her current spot at the business location (like say the dining table at the restaurant where the customer is sitting).
-
The device has full QWERTY keyboard and backlight, which makes it easier for the customer to enter data like name, address, email, phone numbers etc.
-
Business location customized data collection fields (like first name, last name, date of birth etc) are delivered to the device over the internet. This makes it easy for the business owner to change or adjust the fields based on his/her changing business needs over time.
-
The data entered is immediately validated up on submission by the Customer, and the data validation feedback is immediately provided to the customer to take action and re-submit the form.
-
The data is transmitted real-time securely over the internet and is stored in a safe and secure remote data centers for further processing or analysis.
-
The collected data is made available online through a secure Web Portal almost instantly to the business owners for their analysis and actions like running promotional campaigns on customer lists etc.
-
The same device will be used to deliver business location specific Customer Signup Forms, Survey Forms, Loyalty Program Signup forms, coupon validations and any other customized questionnaires that a business would like to use (like Patient information form at the Doctor's location).
-
This will produce much higher response rates from the Customer as it's done while the customer is at the business location.
-
The customer information collected by this device is sterile and accurate as data validation is done immediately up-on customer submitting the forms.
-
The customer feedback received by this device will be more accurate as the customer thoughts are fresh on the kind of service provided at the business location.
-
Most consumer facing businesses already provide Wi-Fi and/or have internet connectivity through Cable or DSL. This invention uses the existing Wi-Fi technology to receive and send data over the internet.
-
Environmentally friendly solution as there is no paper involved and everything is handled electronically.

How it works
The wiZit works as follows.
-
Customer visits a business location to receive services offered by the business.
-
Anytime during the customer visit (like while the customer is waiting for service or during customer checkout process etc), the business representative requests the customer to signup with the business for future promotions, events, discounts etc and/or take a survey on their experience of the current visit and/or signup for any loyalty program and/or other reasons.
-
Customer then responds to the business representative about his/her willingness to signup or take a survey.
-
If Customer agreed to signup, the business representative hands over the wiZit device to the customer and briefly explains how to use the device for data entry and navigation.
-
The wiZit device shows the initial selection to pick promotional signup or survey or loyalty program signup.
-
Depending on customer choice, proper data entry form is rendered on the screen for the customer to input his/her data.
-
Customer inputs the data using keyboard and submits the form.
-
Data entered is validated for correctness and if invalid (say bad email address or invalid zip code or invalid date etc), feedback is provided on the device screen for the Customer to see and take action to correct the appropriate fields and resubmit the form.
-
Once the data is valid, it is securely transmitted to the remote data centers for storage.
-
A confirmation and/or thank you response is rendered to the screen for the Customer.
-
The process ends here and the Customer returns the wiZit device back to the business representative.
-
All the data collected using the wiZit device is made available to the business owner through an online web portal. The business owner or authorized business user can use the online web portal at his or her convenience to analyze customer singup information and survey etc., and use that information in other optional modules offered by web portal like campaigns, loyalty tracking and management, coupon generation and management etc.
